MEN'S TENNIS: Morrison wins Milwaukee Tennis Classic singles title

Sophomore Cliff Morrison had his coming out party this weekend.

Morrison was named the Men's Singles Champion of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and also won the sportsmanship award for the weekend as well.

"It went very well," Morrison said. "Had one of the best tennis weekends of my life."

Morrison won all three of his singles matches against players from Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin and Northwestern University.

"It just proves that my hard work this summer has paid off and that I can compete with people on a high level," Morrison said.

Morrison finds the sportsmanship award to be important as well.

"It's a good thing to be recognized for," Morrison said. "My parents would be proud."

Ball State as a whole showed some resiliency after a shaky start. Friday was a rough day as the team lost six of their eight singles matches with Marquette.

Saturday was a different story. Ball State took four of the six singles matches with Northwestern. The Wildcats finished last season ranked No. 46.

Ball State lost three of their five singles matches with Wisconsin on Sunday. The Cardinals didn't do well in doubles, until they took two of three matches with the Wildcats on Sunday.

Sophomore Andres Monroy won two singles matches and was the only other Cardinal with multiple singles victories on the weekend. Juniors Eduardo Pavia and Shaun Bussert and freshmen Dalton Ablertin and Owen Doherty all came away with a singles victory.

"We showed some good signs and it was a productive weekend," coach Bill Richards said. "It was definitely Cliff's weekend. Just a matter of him gaining a little more confidence and it was a big step in that direction."

The Cardinals return to Muncie for their only home tournament in the fall season. The Ball State Fall Invitational begins Friday and will feature many regional teams.

"It's a tricky week," Richard said. "Just two days of practice as we have Monday off and we can't do much Thursday. We have to make sure we are recovered physically from this tournament."
