MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals 3rd after first day of invitational

At the 2009 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, the one surprise competitor turned out to be a woman.

Mother Nature attempted to insert herself into the men's golf tournament with the first significant rainfall in Muncie since Aug. 28. However, golfers from 15 teams still completed the 36 holes that were scheduled at the par-70 Delaware Country Club.

"The only real rain was earlier this afternoon [at 3 p.m.] for about 15 minutes," coach Mike Fleck said. "They played right through it."

The only major change from previous weeks was in the greens.

"The rain softened up the green a little," Fleck said. "But everyone had to deal with them in that condition."

Ball State University finished the second round in third place with a score of 573 (+13). The Cardinals were led by junior Eric Skillman, who shot a one-under 139 and is in second place.

"I played pretty solid," Skillman said. "I tried not to make any mistakes. The rain made the course play a little longer than before."

Two other Ball State golfers have joined Skillman in the top 11 individuals. Senior Ross Cosat (141) and junior Anthony Novak (143) are in fourth and 11th, respectively.

Freshman Joe Gasser - who is an individual competitor - shot a 150 and is in a tie for 34th.

Bowling Green State University leads the tournament with a four-under 556. Ball State is also chasing the University of Cincinnati, who shot 570. Sophomore Drew Preston of Bowling Green leads all golfers with an eight-under 132.

The invitational will conclude Tuesday with third round play.

"We need to shoot a team score under par," Fleck said. "We've been playing this course for a couple weeks. We need to go out and put up as low of a score as we can."
