Homecoming Royalty Fashion Show happening tonight

Students representing their organizations expect to entertain the audience through dance and fun costumes today at this year's Homecoming Royalty Fashion Show.

Diana Rangel, the homecoming queen candidate representing the Latino Student Union, said the experience she is living is exciting and slightly breath-taking.

"There are 40 candidates you are competing against, so I'm a little nervous," Rangel said.

The event, a 70-year-old Ball State University tradition, will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Pruis Hall with $1 fee for admission.

The royalty fashion show is the first main event before Homecoming Week. Chanel Richards, publicity chairman for this year's Homecoming Steering Committee, said students who attend should expect royalty candidates dressed in original couple costumes to put on a fun show.

"It's interesting to see the different costume ideas the candidates come up with," she said. "Some costumes are just stereotypical, but many are about things I wouldn't even think."

Online voting for royalty ended 4 p.m. Tuesday. The top 10 candidates will be announced by the end of the fashion show and will then be interviewed by judges at the faculty, staff and royalty social next week.

This year's Homecoming king and queen as well as their court will be revealed Oct. 1 during intermission at Air Jam.

Royalty chairman Carrie Cozad said 75 participants will be in this year's event, more than in other years. She said more organizations will be participating for Homecoming.

"I'm hoping we have a great turnout this year and people get excited for the next homecoming events," Cozad said.

Richards said student participation has increased this year. Auditions for the annual talent search were held Monday and Tuesday night, in which about 60 participated.

"I think we had a good turnout this year," Richards said. "Usually we've had around 40 entries, so 60 is really good."

Rangel said so far the process she has gone through as a candidate has not been so frantic, but she expects that to change if she becomes one of the top 10.

"Even if I am not one of the top 10, I hope the audience has as much fun as I will," she said. "This a very exciting thing to look forward to."
