FOOTBALL: Former Ball State coach Hoke picks up first win with San Diego State

SAN DIEGO (AP) - It did not take former Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke long to get his first win with his new team.

After losing its season opener last week, San Diego State University had a 35-19 victory against Southern Utah University on Saturday night for its first win of the season.

Hoke resigned from his coaching to position at Ball State and signed with San Diego State in December following the Cardinals finishing the 2008 regular season undefeated and losing the conference championship game.

In the win Saturday, Ryan Lindley threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score to lead

Vincent Brown caught six passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed a 28-yard punt return and a 36-yard kickoff return for a total of 206 yards.

Brandon Sullivan led the Aztecs' rushing with a career-high 111 yards on 24 carries.

Southern Utah quarterback Cade Cooper completed 15 of 29 passes for 165 yards. He was intercepted three times and sacked three times. Fesi Sitake had seven receptions for 74 yards.

Austin Minefee rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Thunderbirds (1-1).

In his six seasons with the Cardinals, Hoke was 34-38 and was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year. Since Hoke left Ball State, the Cardinals are 0-3 - including a loss to the University of New Hampshire on Saturday.
