FOOTBALL: 49ers cut veteran Huard, paves way for former Ball State QB Davis to make team

The San Francisco 49ers cut veteran quarterback Damon Huard on Tuesday, clearing the way for former Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis to make the team.

Davis is now the undisputed third string quarterback behind Shaun Hill and Alex Smith.

Davis left school a year early to enter April's NFL Draft, when he was selected in the fifth round by San Francisco. He left as Ball State's most prolific passer, holding school records in passing yards, completions and touchdowns. Davis was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Cardinals to an undefeated regular season.

In the 49ers preseason game at Dallas on Saturday, Davis went 10-for-15 for 132 yards. He is expected to receive plenty of playing time in the team's final exhibition game Friday in San Diego, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
