The Ball State University field hockey team lost its first game of the season Friday 5-4 to Fairfield University in double overtime.
The Cardinals allowed three unanswered goals to end the game, including a score with four minutes left in the second half that sent the game into overtime.
Forward Hannah Jones scored twice and added an assist to lead Ball State's attack. Jones has five goals on the season to lead the team. Forward Brittany Hammer and defender Elizabeth Blaum scored their first goals of the year, as the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-2 lead.
The Stags scored twice in a minute to tie the game. The Cardinals managed two shots in overtime, but were unable to connect. Finally, 98 minutes into the contest Carly McCullough put a rebound into the back of the net to end the game.
Ball State returns to action against Villanova University on Saturday
