CHIRP: The Edge - a breakdown of UNT/BSU key matchups

QuarterbackBall State:Kelly Page redshirted last year, learning under Nate Davis and Stan Parrish. Now the keys to the offense have been handed to this highly-touted recruit.

North Texas:Riley Dodge is the redshirt freshman son of coach Todd Dodge. Twice was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year in high school.

Advantage - CardinalsThis is really a wash, but Page gets to make his debut at home.

Running backBall State:MiQuale Lewis rushed for 1,736 yards last year and was named first team All-Mid-American Conference. He's backed up by freshman Eric Williams who has been impressive in fall camp.

North Texas:Cam Montgomery ran for 928 yards and scored nine touchdowns in 2008. He started 10 games last year and broke the 100-yard mark three times.

Advantage - CardinalsArguably the strongest position for Ball State. Lewis is one of the best running backs in the non-BCS conferences.

Defensive lineBall State:Anchored by ends Brandon Crawford and Robert Eddins, the line returns all of its starters. Crawford was second team All-MAC last year and Eddins had four sacks.

North Texas:The defensive line is expected to fluctuate early in the season for North Texas. Sophomore Draylon Ross is the most experienced of the starters with 22 tackles and one sack last year.

Advantage - CardinalsThe adjustment to a 4-3 defense will benefit the line as Eddins and Crawford are going to be turned loose on Dodge.

LinebackersBall State:Junior Davyd Jones moves from a middle linebacker spot to the weak side. Senior Spain Cosby will be a key cog in the front seven for the Cardinals.

North TexasA talented group returns for North Texas, who will start two juniors and a senior. Tobe Nwigwe led the team with 111 tackles and three interceptions last year.

Advantage - Mean Green The group was a strong point last year for North Texas. The Cardinals may need some time to adjust to their new schemes.
