Even with a college education, many graduates still have trouble finding a job in their desired career.
In response to that notion, Ball State University's Career Center has created a lecture series to give students the skills and knowledge they need to get a job.
The week-long series, "Focus on Your Future," will be held at Bracken Library and on the University Green. The lectures will give students tips on conducting a worthwhile job search, including showing how to create a résumé that will stand out among others and developing interview skills.
Joe Goodwin, the assistant director of the Career Center, said he thinks the seminars will be helpful to students.
"We are in a very challenging time in this economy," he said. "The job market will be difficult for a while, and the sooner you are prepared, the better off you will be and the more likely you are to have employment lined up when you graduate."
The university hasn't had a week of programs like this before, Goodwin said. Previous attempts to educate students about the importance of preparing for a future career weren't well-publicized on campus and the turnout was low.
The coordinators of the upcoming seminars said they are hoping for a better turnout from Ball State students of all ages.
"One misconception is that this career focus is geared toward upperclassmen, which is not the case," Goodwin said. "These programs are great for all students. It is also a great way for them to get the career knowledge they need and even help with internships."
Junior Bryan John said that he just began to realize the importance of planning ahead.
"Ball State offers a lot programs that, as students, we don't utilize to the full extent," he said. "As a junior, I am finding myself wishing I had gone to these types of programs and seminars because it would make applying for internships a lot easier."
The skills learned at the seminars can be put to use at the annual Fall Career Fair, which is happening next week.
More than 100 employers from the Midwest, along with a few others from across the nation, will be recruiting Ball State students at Worthen Arena.
