BASEBALL: Three Cardinals named to top prospects list by Baseball America

Baseball America named three Ball State University baseball players to its top prospects list for summer college leagues and Team USA.

Junior Kolbrin Vitek was listed as the top prospect from the Great Lakes League, where he won the Triple Crown and was named All-Star Game MVP. Vitek was joined by sophomores Perci Garner and Nathan Koontz.

Vitek pitched and played third base for Ball State this year, but played second base during the summer. He did plenty of damage at the plate, hitting .400 with six home runs and 38 RBI.

Garner was named the second-best prospect in the Great Lakes League and Koontz was listed as ninth best in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Garner struck out 16 batters in 12 innings and allowed only one extra base hit all summer. Koontz hit .281 with two home runs.

The Cardinals were one of two Mid-American Conference teams with players listed and were the only with multiple prospects recognized by Baseball America. The national publication ranked the top 10 prospects in 17 summer leagues, as well as the top 20 Team USA players and the top 30 prospects from the renowned Cape Cod League.
