Ball State students explore courses, majors on campus

More than 100 students explored potential majors Thursday at an event appropriately named "Meet Your Major."

The event is for students who are undecided about their major.

"Sometimes I think that's a little bit intimidating to freshmen to just go up and start talking to a faculty member," Willow King-Locke, assistant director of the Career Center and coordinator of the event, said.

The event was held under a tent on the University Green, with representatives from 17 departments featured.

This is the third year the event has been held but the first time it was an outside event.

While many majors were represented, not everyone went home happy.

"I was looking for counseling but they weren't here, so I got some other information on social work and some others in my area," freshman Amanda Isenhour said.

On the other hand, some people got exactly what they wanted.

"I was just looking for some information on journalism," freshman Donnie Kolakowski said. "Journalism is my major."

The event was also a great way to see what job markets are still looking to hire despite the recent economic decline.

"We need more chemistry majors in the U.S. We're actually behind other countries. We need more American scientists," Breanna Ricketts, a senior chemistry major, said. "Chemistry has not really been effected by the economy. There's still plenty of jobs to be had."

"I think the better question is, 'what's not exciting about chemistry?'" Ricketts said. "I know, myself, I have a lot of fun making reactions that are different colors."

The same thing is happening in the Department of Natural Resource and Environmental Management.

"It's just an exciting time right now, and it's a good time to go into environmental management because there are going to be a lot of jobs for it in the near future," Lanette Erby, environmental management graduate assistant, said. "I would say the recession helped."

Erby said the policies of the Obama administration have created a "boom time" for green technology.

King-Locke said next year's "Meet Your Major" will also be held outside during the Fall Semester.
