Ball State student hit by car near Noyer Complex

Muncie Police officer says pedestrian, biking accidents increase when students return to campus each year

A Ball State University student is in stable condition at Ball Memorial Hospital after she was struck by a car Tuesday night on campus, Ball Hospital spokesperson Matt Cox said.

Muncie Police Officer Kyle Temple said Jamie Rich, 22, was walking beside her bike to her house on West Centennial Avenue, when she was hit by a black 2007 Pontiac, driven by 19-year-old Erin Craig, also a Ball State student.

Temple, an accident reconstructionist, said Craig was turning left off Neely Avenue, headed southwest into the Noyer parking lot, and didn't see Rich crossing the street.

"The driver was very upset after the accident," he said. "She just couldn't see Jamie walking at the crosswalk. Erin was facing west bound so the sun was in her eyes, and she turned into a shaded parking lot ... she just lost sight of [Rich]."

Police officers received a call to the scene at 6:27 p.m. and the first officer arrived at 6:29 p.m., Temple said.

He said Rich, who hit her forehead on the car windshield, suffered bad scrapes and bruises to her forehead, knee and elbow.

"When the car stopped, she [Rich] slid off the hood and flew 10 feet across the parking lot," Temple said.

Rich complained of elbow and forehead pain and was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital by stretcher in an ambulance, he said.

The car sustained several dents to its hood and two scratches on either side of the bumper, where the bike scratched it, Temple said. Craig was not cited for the crash because it was an accident and she wasn't driving at a high speed, he said.

Temple said pedestrian and bike accidents increase significantly when Ball State students return to Muncie. He said this could be because there are just a lot more people on campus and a lot of students are preoccupied with back-to-school responsibilities.
