Arts Alive

The Arts Alive concert series will begin its sixth season, kicking off a celebration of classical musicians and performers.

The series will begin Oct. 8 with a performance by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble. The chamber orchestra formed in 1959 in England and is the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world with more than 500 recordings.

Highlights of the also series include the March 16 performance by classical trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov, who recorded his first CD at age 15 and has since recorded works by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Johann Nepomuck Hummel, Telemann and Felix Mendelssohn.

Award-winning Indiana University and Curtis Institute of Philadelphia alumnus and pianist, Jonathan Biss, will perform the final concert of the series on April 13.

Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said many of the performers in the series rarely perform outside venues in larger cities such as New York and Los Angeles.

"The opportunity to hear this caliber of performance locally is rare. These performers are absolutely world class, and they have been effusive concerning the great acoustics and sumptuous environment of Sursa Performance Hall," he said.

Tickets for the series will cost $80 or $35 for individual shows. All concerts in the series will begin at 8 p.m. at Sursa Performance Hall. For more information call the box office at (765)-285-5581.
