WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero Rio pulls hamstring, hopes to be back within one month

Ball State University libero Alyssa Rio pulled her left hamstring in the Cardinals' 3-0 Friday night loss to No. 19 Purdue University, the junior told The Ball State Daily News on Saturday night.

Rio said she hopes to return to the lineup within a month. She is still awaiting to be evaluated by team doctors on campus to begin treatment.

Rio led the Cardinals in digs both her freshman (608) and sophomore (566) years. During her 2007 campaign, Rio was fourth in the Mid-American Conference and 37th nationally with a 5.58 digs-per-set average.

Her 1179 career digs also ranks Rio seventh in program history, while her 4.97 digs-per-set average is currently second.

Rio injured her hamstring diving for a ball in the second set of Friday's 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) loss to the No. 19 Boilermakers. She had five digs and two assists at the time of her injury.

Sophomore defensive specialist Christie Waters filled in for Rio against Purdue and accumulated a team-high eight digs. Those expected to immediately fill in for Rio in the lineup include Waters and fellow sophomore defensive specialist Kaylee Schembra.
