WOMEN'S GOLF: Experience key as Ball State tries to finish unfulfilled goals from last season

The Ball State University women's golf team is looking forward to their new season with a surge of confidence.

"Match any of those players right now and they are higher right now because of the level of expertise on the roster," coach Katherine Mowat said of her expectations of the upcoming season.

Junior Brittany Kelly's win in the Indiana Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship was considered an incredible confidence boost and placed her at number one.

"Indiana produces a lot of good competitors," Mowat said. "And for Kelly to go out and beat them all is incredible and shows her skills."

Incoming freshman Autumn Duke is already friends with most of her teammates and fits right in. As far as her skills go, she will definitely contribute to the rest of the team's talent, Mowat said.

As for that special rival match, the team is looking forward to competing against Eastern Michigan University this season. The Cardinals have yet to win against the Eagles and lost by one stroke last year, but the team hopes to become finalists in this season's championship tournament.

Only three goals were left unfulfilled last year and the Cardinals look to change that and come out fully prepared for the new season.

"We want to finish in the top three, lower our team average and get players to make lower scores on more consistent bases," Mowat said.

The women's golf team competes in their first tournament from Sept. 13 to 15 in Primm, Nev.
