SOCCER: Ball State's 2 late goals secures win vs. Xavier in exhibition match

The Ball State University soccer team started its 2009 season with a 2-1 victory in an exhibition match against Xavier University on Monday. Two early second-half goals for the Cardinals helped the team take control of the match.

The two teams used the first half to break themselves into the first game of the season. After halftime adjustments, the Cardinals came out and took the lead they would not relinquish during the second half of play.

Ball State struck first in minute 52 with a goal from Missy Gordon from the top of the 18-yard box that went into the top corner. Freshman Paige Stroinski sealed the victory in minute 62 with a goal.

Stroinski scored from a crosspass sent by Gordon that found its way past the Xavier goalkeeper Kelly Ferrell just inside the 6-yard line.

The Musketeers lone goal came off a converted corner kick in minute 89.

Freshman Nicole Wood picked up the victory for the Cardinals, recording two saves in the second half that included saving a Musketeer breakaway in minute 82 that preserved the shut out at the time. Senior goalkeeper Amy Cleeter recorded a scoreless first half.

The Cardinals outshot the Musketeers 14-9 in the match and also held the advantage 9-2 on corner kicks.

"[Monday] was a great way to start our season as we were able to measure ourselves against another opponent," coach Michael Lovett stated in a press release. "As a team, we played together and more consistent in the second half. Our quality play in the second half was rewarded by a pair of goals and some good scoring chances. Everyone that was healthy was able to play tonight and that is what you want for a preseason contest."

The Cardinals have a few more days to prepare for the season opener on August 28 against the University of Miami (Fla). Two days after the season opener, the Cardinals will visit Florida Atlantic University.
