SOCCER: Ball State suffers 5-1 loss to Miami (Fla.) in opener

The Ball State University soccer team opened its season with a 5-1 loss to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.

Junior midfielder Meg Mellott scored the Cardinals' first goal of the season in the 54th minute of the second half off an assist from defender Skylar Chew to bring the Cardinals within one goal at 2-1. Miami would go on a 3-0 run to end the game to improve to 2-1-0.

The Cardinals (0-1-0) play next against Florida Atlantic University at noon Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla.
