Several new businesses have been brought to downtown Muncie in an attempt to rejuvenate the area.
One of the newest additions is Two Johnny's, which opened in May.
The restaurant features homemade food, a variety of drinks and live jazz every month.
Matt Zacek, owner of Two Johnny's, said he decided to open the store after finding a good location in downtown's Rose Court.
"[The establishment] needed some renovations, but I think this is a great location," he said. "There are some other restaurants and bars downtown, and it is a good place to hang out with friends and have a few beers afterwards."
Cheryl Crowder, program manager for Heart of the City, an organization made up of downtown business owners, said Two Johnny's offers a comfortable atmosphere and is not expensive.
"[The restaurant] is sunny and cheerful," she said. "They have an eclectic selection of food and a chalkboard menu that changes daily."
Zacek has lived in Muncie for 10 years. He said he had worked at White River Landing since he was 21 years old, working his way from washing dishes to managing.
"Once I had a wife and kid I decided that after nine years of learning the business it was a good opportunity to start something of my own," Zacek said.
He said he has focused on serving homemade soups and desserts, which sets his business apart from other restaurants.
"There is a creative element to this restaurant," he said. "As opposed to a restaurant where everything comes in premade and precooked."
So far, business is good, Zacek said. He said he hopes to expand the restaurant's food and entertainment selection during the upcoming semester.
"We want to have more live music," he said. "We want to advertise at the Ball State music building and find students that would be interested in playing at the restaurant."
Crowder said Zacek has a good background experience knowing the clientele and what they want.
"The owner is young, but has a lot of energy," Crowder said. "Downtown Muncie is blessed for the new addition of this restaurant; it adds a different flavor."
