Ball State University men's golfer Eric Steger was eliminated in Wednesday's first round of match play in the 109th U.S. Amateur Championships held in Tulsa, Okla. The junior lost 6 and 5 to Stanford University senior Dodge Kemmer, who advances to tomorrow's 8 a.m. round against University of Central Florida sophomore Connor Arendell.
Steger - one of 312 players in the event - advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championships by winning the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifer at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. He tied for ninth overall after two rounds of stroke play at Tulsa's Southern HIlls Country Club by shooting a 72-71.
Steger shot a 74.45 average for the Cardinals last season and collected one top-10 and five top-25 finishes.
Two former Cardinals also participated, but missed the cut in the stroke play of the championships. Kenny Cook - a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection and team Most Valuable player - shot a 81-72, while Tood Pieri shot a 82-79.
The Ball State men's golf team begins its Fall season on Sept. 12 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind.
