The season-ending injury former Ball State University men's basketball forward Anthony Newell suffered about seven months ago did not turn out to be a career-ending injury.
Newell announced Tuesday that he signed a professional contract with Assigeco Casalpusterlengo in the Italy-A dilettanti league.
As a senior last season, Newell had a team-high 15.2 points per game average before breaking his leg during the Cardinals' conference-opener in January. At the time of the injury, the 2008 preseason all-conference player was five points away from becoming the 25th player in Ball State history to score 1,000 career points.
Without Newell in the lineup for the rest of the season, Ball State finished tied for first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division and lost to the University at Buffalo in the conference tournament semifinals.
Newell will be the second former Ball State player in the last three years to play professional basketball in Italy. Theron Smith, who finished his Ball State career as a 2002 All-MAC First Team selection, played for Pallacanestro Cantú from 2006 to 2008.
