Despite hosting the conference championship match this year, coaches are not expecting the Ball State University field team to be playing in it.
Ball State was predicted to finish the Mid-American Conference in fifth place in the preseason coaches poll released Thursday.
The Cardinals ended the 2008 season tied for last-place in the six-team conference. Its 2-17 record also set the program record for most single-season losses.
Ball State will open its season against Davidson College on Saturday in Davidson, N.C. The Cardinals will play seven home regular season games before hosting the MAC Tournament starting Nov. 5.
Ball State has not won a conference championship since 1999 and has advanced beyond the first round of the MAC Tournament once in the last seven years.
