After losing just one senior, Vanessa Gilbert, from last year's squad, the Ball State University cross country team is gearing up for another shot at the Mid-American Conference championship this fall.
Placing 11th at last year's championship, the Cardinals are looking to rebound and put in a much better finish this year.
Although the team's top finisher in Gilbert is departing, the Cardinals have many promising runners to work with. The 2008 MAC Championship runner-up Ali Bischel returns from injury, while fellow Academic All-MAC selection Sara Kehe will also be returning. The team's other top five runners, including Lisa Arrowsmith, Kelsey Nielson and Brittany Aide, are also competing again in 2009.
Coach Randy Heisler has high expectations for his runners this season.
"If we can improve on our finish from last year and perform to our potential, there is no reason we can't contend for a MAC title," Heisler said.Heisler said with the talent returning, all the spots remain wide open. It should make for a very competitive camp.
The team look to get off to a fast start in the Ball State Invitational on Aug. 31. It's the team's first home meet of the season and starts at 5 p.m.
