WOMEN'S GOLF: Three Cards named All-American scholars

Three members of the Ball State University women's golf team received a national academic honor Thursday.

Senior Kirsty O'Connor, junior Rachael Pruett and sophomore Katie Windlan were named National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars.

To be eligible for this award, a player must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and play in at least 50 percent of the team's rounds during the season.

With a 3.877 cumulative GPA, this is the third consecutive season O'Connor - a German education major - was selected as an All-American scholar. In the 2008-09 season, O'Connor had three top-five finishes and tied the school record for the lowest 18-hole round score with a 69 at the Eastern Kentucky El Diablo Invitational in March.

Pruett, a exercise science major, was named a scholar for the second straight year after finishing the Spring Semester with 3.758 cumulative GPA. She also had eight top-20 finishes last season, including a seventh-place finish at the El Diablo Invitational.

Windlan was named to the team for the first time as she finished her freshman season with a 3.758 cumulative GPA. The criminal justice major averaged a 84.33 per round in her first season at Ball State.

Along with these three current players, Sarah Windlan was named an All-American scholar for the third consecutive year. Windlan, who finished her senior season with Ball State in April, was a marketing major and had a 3.846 cumulative GPA.

The Cardinals finished the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship in sixth place and won three tournaments last season, including the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational.

Ball State will open the 2009-10 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 13 in Primm, Nev.
