Fourth of July festivities

How to throw a party on a budget: follow these easy, money-saving tips to make the best of your holiday celebration

Not only are the budgets of many college students limited to begin with, but the current economy has left few dollars to spend on that desired Fourth of July bash. However, there are a few easy, money-saving tips to help anyone throw a low-budget party.

Reduce the number of guests

Throwing a huge party with a large amount of guests always seems like the most desirable idea, but it's also the fastest way to break a budget. Limiting guests to close friends and family makes it much easier to keep the party low-key and avoid excessive expenses. Also, maintaining a limited guest list makes it easier to have an idea of exactly how many people plan to attend. Planning with an exact number of attendees in mind allows one to shop accordingly, without overbuying.

Make it a potluck

The hospitality provided when hosting a party is greatly appreciated and guests are understanding when the host doesn't have the money to provide every aspect of the event. Because barbecues are the basis of most Fourth of July parties, the host should provide the main staple of the meal and ask everyone else to bring a dish to share. With only close friends and family in attendance, guests are likely to be more than willing to provide a dish. In addition, alcohol is a huge expense, especially when providing for a number of people - make the party a BYOB occasion.

Bargain shop

Because the party is most likely a barbecue, the main staple of the meal will be meat. Unfortunately, meat is often times the most expensive meal item. Be on the look out for sales and shop around before settling for a price. Or choose a cheaper meat than steaks and chicken with an alternative such as hot dogs. Also, dollar stores are a great place to purchase necessities such as plastic utensils, paper plates, napkins, cups, decorations and other similar items at a low price.

Fireworks

Setting off your fireworks at home is fun, but it's also very expensive. Instead of spending the money to make an at-home display, check out the list of free local fireworks shows to attend!
