FOOTBALL: 49ers sign former Ball State quarterback Davis to 4-year deal

Former Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis is now officially a member of an NFL team.

The San Fransisco 49ers announced Friday that it signed Davis to a four-year contract.

The 49ers selected Davis in the fifth round of the NFL Draft in April.

Davis started three season for Ball State and was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year after the Cardinals finished the regular season undefeated. Despite forgoing his senior season to enter this year's NFL Draft, he finished his college career with the school record for most career passing yards and career touchdowns.

Terms of Davis' contract have not been released.

The 49ers will begin their training camp next week. The team said earlier this month that Davis is not being considered for its starting quarterback position and either Shaun Hill or Alex Smith will be named the starter during the preseason.

San Fransisco will open its preseason against the Denver Broncos on Aug. 14 and will play its season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13. The 49ers finished last season 7-9 and in second place in the NFC West.
