Ball State University announced its plans to open new charter schools throughout the state in 2009 and 2010.
President Jo Ann Gora approved the new plans for the opening of a charter school in Hammond in 2010 last week.
The new school, Hammond Academy for Science and Technology, will be one of three schools opening in 2010.
The Hammond Academy will serve grades six through nine and is expected to have an enrollment of 320 students. The school plans to add a grade each year until it reaches grades 6-12.
Ball State, Indiana University, Purdue University and Indiana State University are the only public universities in Indiana allowed to sponsor charter schools.
Larry Gabbert, the director of the office of charter schools, said the university has a history in improving public education.
"Ball State stepped up immediately to sponsor charter schools as part of our mission," he said.
Twenty-nine schools are now sponsored by Ball State.
Although Ball State sponsors the charter schools, the university does not run the schools.
Gabbert said the university "does not get involved in the day-to-day management of the schools."
