The time to sing and dance down McKinley Avenue has come for Ball State University students who love their musicals.
The Department of Theatre and Dance recently released their schedule for the upcoming school year, which includes productions of "Hair" and "My Fair Lady." This follows Emens Auditorium announcing in May that its 2009-10 lineup will feature "The Wedding Singer" and "Avenue Q."
After years of the university bringing in or producing the occasional one or two good musical productions per school year, this lineup with four well-known musicals has the potential to significantly increase student interest and attendance at shows.
When planning out this year's lineup for the Department of Theatre and Dance, one of the biggest factors was listening to students and producing shows they would want to attend.
They did their part to create a lineup featuring popular productions. Now it's time for students to do their part and show up.
Whether you are going to support local artists or because you are looking for a night of entertainment, make the time to attend these productions.
Throughout the school year students usually have the complaint - and at times justifiably so - of there being nothing to do in Muncie. This upcoming school year, though, there will at least be four good musicals that students can see for affordable prices, and they won't need to leave campus to attend them.
Attending these productions are also important to ensure more good plays will come to Ball State in the future. If these plays have a low attendance, it will only become more difficult in future years for the Emens and the Department of Theatre and Dance to schedule performances that will be compelling for students.
You don't have to be obsessed with musicals to enjoy these productions.
"Hair" and "My Fair Lady" are two classical plays that are enjoyable, even for people who are not highly involved in the arts.
"The Wedding Singer" is currently still on Broadway and is based on the Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comedy movie from the 1990s. Also, "Avenue Q" is one of the funniest Broadway musicals this decade - unless you include the attempt to make a musical out of the movie "Lord of the Rings."
Everyone's schedule gets incredibly busy throughout the school year. However, you have the rest of this summer and the beginning of the Fall Semester to fit a couple of these shows into your schedule.
Take the time and give yourself a few hours for these shows - it's worth the time.
