Incoming freshman visit BSU

Orientation begins today and will go until July 10; about 180 students arriving daily

There will be a lot of new faces on campus in the coming weeks.

Orientation for incoming freshmen begins today and runs through July 10. There will be about 180 students and 300 family members beginning their orientation every day from Monday through Thursday.

The university's orientation Web site calls orientation the start of the school year. Orientation allows students and their families to become familiar with the campus and university. It also allows students to meet other people starting Ball State in the Fall.

Incoming students schedule classes and become more familiar with services like dining, housing and financial aid. Students will also get their Freshman Connections common reader, which this year is "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier."

Orientation activities take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day.

Students attending orientation will stay in Woodworth Complex. Woodworth Commons dining hall will be open this summer to accommodate orientation. Groups will eat there between 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. In previous years, incoming students and their families had dined at The Atrium.

Family members of students are encouraged to attend the two-day program. They stay in Park Hall or local hotels and attend information sessions with students on the first day. On the second day, they attend their own programs, including a discussion panel. They are not allowed to be with students as they schedule classes.

Muncie Downtown Development and MITS are offering bus trips for family members to go downtown and familiarize themselves with the area.
