Group protests changes to Women's studies program

About 40 people held an on-campus protest Friday because of recent changes made to the Women's studies program.

Ball State University students, alumni and faculty gathered at noon Friday to voice their opinions throughout North Quad and the Scramble Light.

The protesters met outside Burkhardt Building to start their march around North Quad, which lasted about 30 minutes. Many of the protesters, including alumnus Hallie Adams, carried signs during the rally that showed support for the Women's studies program.

"We had an amazing turnout. Furthermore proof on how much this program means to so many people," Adams, who also created a Facebook group to protest the changes, said. "We did the best we can do. From here on out, it's up to the task force."

This protest came about two weeks after the university announced it was making changes to the program this fall, including changing the name to Women's and Gender Studies and requiring the program's director to be a tenure or tenure-track faculty member.

Women's studies became an official Ball State program in 1975 and had about 80 students either pursuing a major or minor in the program during the Spring Semester.
