Friday Nite Filmworks sets its Fall Semester schedule

Free movies include mix of action, comedy summer blockbusters

Every Friday night throughout the Fall Semester Ball State University students will be able to enjoy blockbuster movies for free.

Friday Nite Filmworks is a program sponsored by the University Program Board.

President of the University Program Board Dillon Kimmel said Friday Nite Filmworks is a great program sponsored by the university that does not involve partying or alcohol consumption. Last year about 450 to 500 students came to the movies shown at Pruis Hall. However, there may be a higher turnout this year, depending on which movie is being shown.

For example, last year at the showing of "Twilight," the University Board had to turn people away because the auditorium was filled to its maximum capacity, Kimmel said. He said that movie generated the most buzz for the filmworks program during the past year.

The movies that were chosen to be shown this year were determined by Kimmel and his officers. At first, Kimmel and the committee said they were concerned that they chose too many "shoot-up" movies that did not necessarily appeal to their audience.

"We surveyed people that attended the screenings last year and about 65 percent of the people that attended the movies were female and we had to somewhat cater to that audience," Kimmel said.

For this reason, the team replaced some of the original movies that were first entered into the program schedule. One movie that was chosen to be a part of the revised schedule was "The Proposal."

"It's tough to balance movies that fit the audience and the movies that did well at the box office," Kimmel said.

This year Kimmel said that he expects "Star Trek" to have a large turnout because it is being shown on the Quad after Quad Bash. He said the Quad Bash screening seems to have a large audience.

The University Board would also like to hold two screenings of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" because of the expected audience turnout.

John Speer, program director of the University Program Board, said that he is looking forward to this year's movie program.

"The best part about Friday Nite Filmworks is that it is a good way to enjoy a free movie. ... It's something to do on a Friday night," Speer said. "And students don't have a lot of extra money to spend. Everyone should come out."
