A former Ball State University athletics director will be honored today for his performance at his new school.
University of Tulsa athletics director Bubba Cunningham was named the 2008-09 Football Bowl Subdivision Central Region Athletics Director of the Year earlier this week and will receive the award at a reception today in Orlando.
Cunningham was Ball State's athletics director for three years before leaving the university in October 2005 to take the vacant position at Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane (11-3) advanced to the Conference USA championship game last season and defeated the Cardinals 45-13 in the GMAC Bowl. Tulsa also was ranked in the top 25 polls at times throughout the season and received votes in final the Associated Press Poll.
In addition, Cunningham led a $60 million fundraising initiative for athletics department, including a $20 million renovation to Tulsa's football stadium.
