BSU not best all-around school

Cardinals fail to win trophies for sixth consecutive year

The streak of Ball State University not a winning the conference's best all-around school in either men's or women's sports is now at six years.

The Mid-American Conference announced Friday that Ball State finished the 2008-09 school year in fifth place in the Reese Trophy standings and 10th place in the Jacoby Trophy standings.

These two trophies are annual awards with the Reese Trophy given to the school that has the best overall men's athletics teams and the Jacoby Trophy being awarded to the school with the best overall women's athletics teams.

Ball State won its last Reese Trophy in 1998 and its last Jacoby Trophy in 2003.

The winners of these awards are determined by a point system. In this system, points are awarded on a school's finish in each sport and then the total number is divided by the amount of sports the school sponsors.

Ball State finished the Reese Trophy standings with 45 points and a 7.5 point average - a 2.57 point average behind the winner Kent State University.

The Cardinals had three of their six men's sports teams competing in the MAC win at least a share of the West Division title. However, none of those teams - baseball, football and men's basketball - won a MAC championship.

In the Jacoby Trophy standings, Ball State received 65.5 points and had a 5.95 point average to finish in third to last place. Miami University won the trophy with a 9.79 point average.

Ball State has won the Reese Trophy four times in the award's 51-year history. It also has won the Jacoby Trophy five times since the conference introduced the award in 1982.
