Ball State student finishes 4th runner-up for Miss Ohio crown

A Ball State University student finished in the top five in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program.

Ellen Bryan, a junior telecommunications major, was named the fourth runner-up at the sate-wide competition Saturday in Mansfield, Ohio.

Bryan was selected as one of five finalists for the title after scoring in the top half of the 10 semifinalists during the evening wear, swimsuit and talent portions of the Miss Ohio finals.

As the fourth runner-up, Bryan received a $1,500 scholarship.

Bryan reached the Miss Ohio competition after winning the Miss Lake Festival earlier this year. In Saturday's finals, she competed as a vocalist talent, and her platform was "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors" to promote lighting awareness.

Erica Gelhaus, a senior at Otterbein College, was crowned Miss Ohio and will advance to the 2010 Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas.

The Ball State student to advance to the Miss America Pageant was Nicole Rash. Rash was crowned Miss Indiana in June 2007 and was named the 2008 Miss America's first runner-up.

Bryan was one of two Ball State students participating in the 25-person competition. Kristy Moneysmith, 19, did not advance beyond the preliminaries, which were held Wednesday through Friday.
