WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State announces its 2009 schedule

It won't take the Ball State University women's volleyball team long to get tested in the upcoming season.

The Cardinals released their 2009 schedule on Friday and will play two NCAA Tournament teams from last season within the first two weeks of their season.

Ball State will open the season against Purdue University on Aug. 28 in West Lafayette as part of the Mortar Board Premier Tournament. The Boilermakers finished the 2008 regular season with the most conference wins in the Big Ten since 1987 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

Following this three-match tournament, Ball State will host the Active Ankle Challenge in Worthen Arena and play the University of Louisville on Sept. 5. Louisville advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and lost to Purdue in the first round.

Of Ball State's 13 non-conference matches, 10 will be played in Indiana.

The Cardinals will open the season with three in-state tournaments, including the the ISU Classic on Sept. 12-13 at Terre Haute. It will play a road match against IUPUI on Sept. 15.

Ball State will only travel out of Indiana during the non-conference season to play in a three-match tournament in Maryland on Sept. 18.

The Cardinals will start conference play Sept. 25 with a match against Northern Illinois University at Worthen Arena.

After setting a program record most losses in a single season in 2007, Ball State finished last season 12-21 and advanced to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals. The team will also have all six starters returning from last season.
