OUR VIEW: Enjoy this time

AT ISSUE: Students need to make the most out of their summer at Ball State

OK, we know this is probably not how you would want to spend a summer.

Rather than returning to your warm bed at home, going to a foreign country or even relaxing somewhere on a beach, you get to spend the summer at Ball State - where the closest thing there is to a beach are the sand volleyball courts by Noyer Complex.

Complaining won't make these next three months go any quicker. Instead, take this summer as an opportunity to explore and learn more about the campus and Muncie.

If it wasn't obvious by the lack of people walking down McKinley Avenue, the summer at Ball State definitely is different than the regular school year. Not only do the classes meet more often because of the condensed semester, but there are not the typical activities happening on campus such as Late Nite and the University Program Board's Friday Night Filmworks.

With this lack of action happening and the limited amount of people on campus, take some time to enjoy the beauty of Ball State.

Often during the school year it is too cold or everyone's schedule is too busy to sit by the Duck Pond and watch the sun set, go sunbathing on LaFollette Field or read a book under a tree in the Quad. However, this summer you may have the time and the opportunity to do those things that you could not do during the craziness of the Fall and Spring Semesters.

In addition to taking advantage of the campus in summer, this is time of year to visit the Muncie outside of Ball State for your entertainment.

If you are used to only eating on campus or in the Village during the year, take some time to go downtown and try a restaurant that you have never eaten at before. If you usually attended campus events to fill your weekend, it is still possible to do that this summer but with events happening in Muncie.

Everything from the Muncie Endurathon - a relay triathlon competition - to plays at the Muncie Civic Theatre and live band performances at local bars is available for Ball State students this summer. You may just have to go off-campus, or try something new, to get it.

Take advantage of these opportunities that Ball State and Muncie has to offer students. Some of them may turn out to be a bad idea, but it at least it will help prevent this from becoming another boring summer at Ball State.
