New dean appointed to college

Dean from Stephen F. Austin to start at position in summer

The longest active dean on campus is stepping down from his position and will be replaced beginning July 1.

John Jacobson was named the Dean of Teachers College on Friday, replacing Roy Weaver, who has worked as dean for the past 16 years at Ball State University.

Jacobson has served as the dean of the James I. Perkins College of Education at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas since 2003. In that position, he directed a charter school and managed a $45 million budget, according to a Ball State campus e-mail.

From 2000 to 2003, Jacobson was associate dean of the School of Education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Jacobson has received consistent superior marks from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education in both positions.

Jacobson also worked as a professor and director of graduate studies at the University of Texas at Arlington for 10 years

In a press release from Provost Terry King, King stated that Jacobson's appointment will help Ball State "continue the successful implementation of the Education Redefined strategic plan."

The Education Redefined plan began in 2007 and will be implemented until 2012. One goal of the plan is to incorporate immersive learning projects into the curriculum at Ball State.

During his time as dean, Weaver achieved national recognition for the program by creating the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics and Humanities and developing the Burris Laboratory School.

In 2007, the Burris Laboratory School earned Blue Ribbon School designation from the U.S. Department of Education and was named one of the country's best high schools by U.S. News and World Report.

Weaver will continue to work on campus as a professor of curriculum in the Department of Educational Studies.
