MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards swept in conference tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio - For the second straight season the Ball State University men's volleyball team had the same result in the conference championship match: getting swept.

No. 10 Ohio State University eliminated Ball State 30-25, 32-30, 30-19 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament championship match on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

With this win, Ohio State will advance to the NCAA Final Four and Ball State's streak of not winning a conference title extends to a program-worst seven years. In that seven-year stretch, the Cardinals lost three championship matches, including last season's MIVA title match against the Buckeyes.

Ball State had less than a .110 attack percentage in all three games, including a -.057 attack percentage in the final game. Ohio State finished the match with a .224 attack percentage.

The Cardinals' best chance to win a game against Ohio State came in the second game.

Ball State led 27-22 in the second game, but the Buckeyes went on a 6-1 run to tie the game. Ohio State would then score three of the four points in overtime and take a two-game lead.

In his final collegiate match, senior outside attacker Todd Chamberlain had a team-high 11 kills.

Chamberlain was one of three Cardinals to be named to the MIVA All-Tournament team.

Libero Billy Ebel was named to the team after having a match-high 14 digs in the loss. Ebel also had a match-high 22 digs in Ball State's five-game semifinals victory against No. 12 Lewis University.

In addition, middle attacker Andy Nelson received the honor in his first season in Division I. Nelson had eight kills and a team-high .400 attack percentage in the loss.

Ohio State had three players make the MIVA All-Tournament team, including middle attacker Kevin Heine, who was named the MIVA Tournament MVP. Heine had seven kills in the sweep against Ball State.
