MEN'S GOLF: Cardinal trying to qualify for U.S. Open

A Ball State University men's golfer is looking to take his off-season training to a new level after a recent tournament.

Anthony Novak will compete in U.S. Open sectional play May 25 in Purchase, N.Y., in hopes of qualifying for the mid-June tournament.

The top four golfers from the recent U.S. Open local qualifier in South Bend qualified for the sectional play match. Novak finished second in the match, to former Ball State golfer Scott Pieri.

Novak was named the most valuable golfer this season, averaging 76.11 strokes per match. Novak also boasts two top 20 finishes, including a first place finish at the Ball State Cardinal Collegiate.

If Novak qualifies for the U.S. Open, he would join the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia in June for one of golf's four majors.
