"Frog Baby" vandalized by bikini drawing

Campus officials aren't pursuing any suspects after icon was chalked

Despite "Frog Baby" being dressed up in a pink chalk bikini last weekend, Ball State University said that they had no intention to pursue the person who drew on the statue.

Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities planning and management, said he didn't notice "Frog Baby's" outfit until several days after it was drawn. By this time, he said, rain had washed away much of the chalk and taken care of the problem.

Although there are security cameras in the area, Kenyon said they are used more for theft prevention than to catch people chalking.

"Frog Baby gets decorated several times a year," Kenyon said. "I would almost call it a tradition."

"Frog Baby," a three-foot bronze statue, has been located across from Bracken Library near University Green since 1993. It has been a Ball State tradition for students to rub the figure's nose for good luck before final exams.

Gene Burton, director of public safety, said Tuesday that the university police were unaware of the defacement.

Kenyon added that this type of vandalism is to be expected at a college campus, as long as the statue isn't damaged.

Kenyon also said there are plans to restore "Frog Baby" later this summer. It has been about 10 to 12 years since the figure has been worked on, Kenyon said.

"Beneficence" was also recently renovated to remove a green tint from the statue, Kenyon said. A cleaning vehicle used on the statue was vandalized in a separate act over the weekend, when more than a dozen campus vehicles had their tires slashed.
