Does size really matter?

Art museum opens exhibit with preview attended by Muncie residents

In art, the element of scale is often disregarded. However, in an effort to emphasize the importance of scale, The Ball State University Museum of Art opened their latest exhibition, "A Matter of Size."

The Museum of Art hosted the exhibition's preview this past Saturday. This summer-long exhibition features artists such as photographer Ansel Adams, and sculptor Tony Smith.

"Although it is a principle of art and design, [scale] is often easily overlooked and not really considered in any extensive kind of way, so the examples we pulled helped develop different concepts of the exhibition," Tonia Said, curator of education for the art museum, said.

Carl Schafer, associate director of the Museum of Art, was at the preview, making sure all the event's happenings went off without a hitch.

Schafer explains, "Size is something that you rarely talk about in art, even though it's in front of you."

In addition to the large range of size in the works of art, a number of different mediums are also present in the exhibition. The diverse exhibition showcases anything from portrait sketches, to paintings, to the likes of an Indian headdress that was used to scare unfortunate recipients right before a beheading.

The preview included people from all walks of life, many of which were unfamiliar with the art being showcased. Visitors have the opportunity to experience art while learning something new.

An attendee of the show, Hope Robinson, frequents and enjoys many of the Museum of Art's exhibitions with her husband, a faculty member of Ball State.

"This is all brand new to me," said Robinson.

Also in attendance was a Wilson Middle School sixth grade English teacher, Pam Dragoo, and her husband Sam.

"We love the event, it gets us out and gets us over here. We feel invited because it's part of Ball State," Pam Dragoo said.

However, with attendance reaching just over a few hundred people, many people missed out on the exhibition's preview.

"It's pretty neat, I think that many people here in the community miss out, so you just have to take advantage of them," Sam Dragoo said.

A Matter of Size will be open through Sept. 6, so it's not too late to check out the exhibition for those who missed the preview. The Museum of Art is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is open and free to the public.
