BSU takes national award

Ball State graduate recognized for her lighting technique

A recent Ball State graduate won a national award from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for her lighting design in a play performed in Strother Theatre last fall.

Marciel Greene won the Barbizon Award for Excellence in Lighting Design from the American College Theater Festival, after graduating in May with a bachelor's degree in theatre with a design and technology option.

Greene said she got a really good response for her lighting design of "In the Blood" from professors and a representative from the American College Theater Festival and decided to enter it into the Festival.

She said she competed against about 25 other lighting designers at the regional level. This is the second time that she has competed at regionals. She won and got a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete against seven other regional winners.

As part of the judging, Greene said, theater professionals asked her about her design vision. She showed them photographs and explained her concept and process.

As the national winner, she won a $500 cash prize, a trip to the prestigious "Ming's Clambake" Stage Design Portfolio Review and a three day series of Live Design Master Classes in New York.

She said she had the opportunity to meet Beverly Emmons, a Broadway lighting designer and one of Greene's personal heroes.

Greene credits the Department of Theatre and Dance for helping her succeed.

"The Ball State theatre department is really incredible and they don't get recognized for the work that they do," she said.

Greene also won a fellowship to attend the O'Neill Playwright's Conference.
