BASEBALL: Cards clinch MAC West Division title

With an 8-6 win against the University of Toledo on Friday at Ball Diamond the Ball State University baseball team clinched the Mid-American Conference West Division title for the first time since 2005.

The victory extended the Cardinals' MAC winning streak to five games and assures Ball State of the No. 2 seed in next week's MAC Tournament. It will play the No. 7 seed Eastern Michigan University in their opening round game at Chillicothe, Ohio.

Senior reliever Tom Mueller (2-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings for the victory, allowing one unearned run and striking out four. Junior right-hander Aaron Hammons threw the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the year.

Ball State struck first with four runs in the first inning off Toledo starter Matt Kuna. The Rockets rallied and eventually took a one-run lead in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the inning.

Center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker, designated hitter Kolbrin Vitek and shortstop T.J. Baumet all had two hits for Ball State. Second baseman Nate Fields and pinch hitter Cody Elliot drove in two runs each.

Ball State will finish its series with Toledo and its regular season Saturday at 1 p.m.
