Students who have the luxury of buying meals on campus with meal cards will now have the added comfort of an additional hour for lunch.
Ball State University Dining Services extended the lunch meal period from 3:29 p.m. to 4:29 p.m. starting this week.
Elizabeth Poore, assistant director of operations, said this change will be a permanent one.
Comment cards collected during the past two years at dining locations on campus showed a lot of interest in increasing the lunch period, Poore said.
Senior special education major Patti Kupchik said this change will benefit her and encourage her to eat on campus more often.
"I get out of class later, so it's easier to go get lunch [after 4 p.m.]," she said.
Kupchik said when lunch ended at 3:29 p.m., she thought "'Well, there goes lunch' and then I'm not hungry for dinner yet."
Poore said the changes to the university's system were relatively easy ones to make and will give students like Kupchik more time to eat lunch during busy class schedules.
"I just think if students are making the request, obviously it's something they care about," Poore said.
Meal card equivalencies for all three meals will also be expanding beginning Aug. 19.
Students will have another location to use their meal cards at starting Aug. 24, when the Talley Food Court reopens in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.
Karen Adkins, assistant director of personnel, training and administration, said the food court will include Starbucks, Taco Bell, a soup and salad bar and comfort foods.
The Starbucks at this location will be the first one on campus to offer the entire menu and to accept Starbucks gift cards.
Students will be able to use their meal plan at all of these locations. But people wishing to use their meal plan will have to choose between using it at Starbucks or at the other dining options because the Starbucks will operate separately from the rest of the Talley, Adkins said.
The Talley will be open until midnight from Monday through Friday, beginning at the start of the Fall Semester.
