WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals prepare for 36-hole day, tough competition

After some horrible weather forced some uncharacteristic scores by the Ball State University women's golf team earlier this week, the team will look to rebound in West Lafayette at the Purdue Ladies Midwest Shootout.

The tournament will be Saturday and will consist of two rounds. Both rounds will be completed Saturday.

This marks the third tournament this spring in which Ball State will play 36 holes in one day. The El Diablo Invitational, the Cardinals' lone tournament victory this spring, included a 36-hole day.

"This tournament might have the toughest field of all the tournaments this far," coach Katherine Mowat said.

With four teams competing that are ranked in the top 25 - Vanderbilt University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Kentucky and Kent State University - the competition will be fierce.

This will be the Cardinals' third tournament this academic year in Indiana. They won the Cardinal Classic in the fall and finished 11th out of 15 teams earlier this week at the Indiana Invitational.

The tournament in West Lafayette is the last one before the Cardinals participate in the Mid-American Conference Championship.

Mowat said this tournament would "be a great tournament for us before we head into the conference championship."

Mowat was quick to point out the Cardinals' victory at the El Diablo Invitational, which had a 36-hole day, and that they will need to embrace it to succeed in the next two tournaments.

Since their first place finish at the El Diablo Invitational, the team has failed to shoot a team score under 313. In its victory, all three rounds were 309 or under.

Mowat said she hopes for good weather for her team after such horrible weather at the Indiana Invitational.

"The conditions were so bad that I was surprised we played at all," Mowat said. "It would be nice to play in good conditions again."

Scoring will be available online at GolfStat.com.
