The Ball State University track and field team's outdoor season took flight when the Cardinals commenced their season at the Mike Poehlien Invitational. The Cardinals flew away with three first-place finishes at the event hosted by Purdue University.
Fifth-year senior Amber Williams captured the blue ribbon in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.05 seconds. Fellow Cardinal Janae Taylor ran a time of 12:30 to clinch fourth place and ran a 24.62 in the 200-meter to capture second place.
Junior Katie Johnson also gained momentum for Ball State at the invitational with her 14.08 100-meter hurdles first-place finish. Johnson was the Mid-American Conference outdoor champion for the 2008 season for Ball State.
As for relay events, 4x100s relay 'A' concluded the competition with a 46.59 to steal Ball State's third and final win for the meet.
With a height of 5-foot-3-inches senior Jessica Genovese placed eighth in the high jump. Freshman Ebony James tied for ninth with at 5-foot-1-inch jump.
In the 1500-meter run, junior duo Brittany Ade and Sarah Kehe completed with the race with Ade in 13th place with a time of 4:49.32 and Kehe trailing closely behind in 16th place with a time of 4:50.44.
Junior Tyra Schantz placed 12th with a 140-foot throw in the hammer throw. Teammate sophomore Jordan Puckett finished 18th with a 125-foot-1-inch throw for the Cardinals.
Next Friday Ball State will carry its season forward to Oxford, Ohio, to compete in the Miami Invitational.
