Three teams participate in Gay Games

Participants competed in three-legged race, tug-of-war and kickball

Three teams participated in Spectrum's first Gay Games as part of the group's Spring Week of events.

Members from Ball State University's Latino Student Union, women's rugby team and Spectrum gathered in Ball Gymnasium Tuesday after rain moved the event indoors.

Participants competed in a tug-of-war contest, a human wheelbarrow race, three-legged race and a championship game of kickball.

After the first three rounds, the Latino Student Union team and the women's rugby team had the highest point totals, so they advanced to the final round. After several rounds of kickball, the Latino Student Union was announced the winner and received a handmade Plexiglas trophy by a member of the group.

Despite support from the enthusiastic crowd, the Spectrum team finished with the lowest total points.

"Super Gay," an unidentified mascot for the Spectrum team, dressed in a rainbow striped beanie and cape and participated in several events.

Spectrum President Damon Clevenger said Super Gay was the group's "secretary of defense."

"She's like our Happy Friday Guy," he said.

Following the upbeat attitude of Super Gay, the teams all demonstrated sportsmanship by cheering for the other teams.

Spectrum Secretary Jacinta Yanders said she thought the event was a success, but wished the event could have been held outside.

"I think it would have gotten more attention," she said.

Yanders said the goal for next year is to recruit more teams to compete in the games.

Tiffany Washington, Spectrum adviser and assistant director of student life, said the event was "phenomenal."

"People who are here are really into it," she said. "It shows a sense of unity among the organization and other organizations. Most of all, the students are having fun and that's what it's all about."
