Students dress in drag for Cirque du So Gay

Spectrum brings in $500 in donations for Human Rights group

For one night, it was socially acceptable for a guy to stuff a dollar bill down another man's blouse in public.

Spectrum held its annual drag show in Ball Gym Saturday. This year's show, Cirque du So Gay, had a circus theme and featured members of Spectrum performing songs while dressed in drag.

Kara Mitchell, sophomore advertising major and one of the hosts for the show, said about 1,000 people were at the show.

"[People come] here to be entertained and to donate to the cause of the charity we chose," she said. "I became very active with Spectrum this year, so in being active with it, it made me want to participate more, not just being the host, but also performing."

The drag show made about $500 in donations and tips to benefit the Human Rights Campaign, a civil rights organization that focuses on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual equality.

Spectrum president Damon Clevenger said the group always tries to increase attendance and get Spectrum's name out in the open.

"We always try to think of some new feature for the show," he said. "Decorations, guest queens, the silent auction, all to make the show bigger."

Clevenger said the drag show has benefitted multiple charitable organizations in the past.

Mitchell said Spectrum has plans for their week of events this fall and to participate in Homecoming and Air Jam. She also said the group will organize dancing events.

A magician performed during the reception before the drag show. Noel Kunz's yo-yo act and a special dance performance by Michael Humphrey were featured during the intermission.
