Brendan Nusbaum's hobby of singing in the shower has given him the chance to win a national competition and $5,000.
Garnier Fructis' Sing in the Shower Contest, which teamed up with American Idol to sponsor the singing contest, received thousands of online entries.
When the telecommunications major, who has written more than 30 songs, saw an online advertisement for the contest, he said it seemed like a good fit for him.
"Gosh, I sing in the shower all the time," he said. "The acoustics in a shower are great. I can hear if songs work or if they don't work."
Applicants could choose from five songs to perform and were judged in the first round based on creativity and performance quality.
Nusbaum said his decision to perform The Romantics hit "What I Like About You" was easy because the song is catchy and frequently gets stuck in his head.
To make his performance more original, Nusbaum said, he put a pop spin on the song.
"I'm sure The Romantics wouldn't be proud of it, but that's alright," he said. "What really set me apart was the filmography of the video."
As an aspiring film director and song writer, Nusbaum said he was able to give the video a simple, professional look of a "legitimate music video."
With his dad's help, Nusbaum said, they filmed the video in his garage, edited it at home and sent it in "right in the nick of time."
The five finalists are featured on Garnier's Web site, where it is up to the public to choose a winner. Voting closes April 30 and the winner will be announced on May 15.
"Now it's kind of a popularity contest, unfortunately," Nusbaum said.
If he wins, Nusbaum will receive a trip to the finale of American Idol and a $5,000 cash prize, which he said he would use to buy good quality equipment and begin recording his original songs.
