SOFTBALL: BSU to play 'very beatable' Purdue

Coach says Cards have good chance to beat Big Ten team

Despite Tuesday's game against the University of Dayton being canceled, the Ball State University softball team will try again today against Purdue University.

Last year, the Cardinals defeated the Boilermakers 7-3 in Muncie.

The Boilermakers are 20-14 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten this season.

Ball State assistant coach Stephanie De Feo said the Boilermakers, on paper, is a very good team, but has been plagued by inconsistency.

"They are one of those teams that if we step on them early and we stay there, they'll be flat," De Feo said. "They play with a lot of emotion."

Coach Craig Nicholson said Elizabeth Milian is his probable starter for the game.

Milian is Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week. Last weekend, she went 3-0 including the fourth shutout of her career Saturday against the University of Toledo. For the weekend, Milian threw 20 strikeouts in 23 innings of work. Her ERA of 1.85 is the third best in the MAC and first in the MAC West. Milian's 146 strikeouts on the season are the second best in the MAC, and she is 54 away from the Ball State single-season strikeout record.

Also coming off a productive weekend for the Cardinals is shortstop Alicia Barkley. Barkley went 8-14 on the weekend with six RBIs, five stolen bases and the game-winning RBI in Sunday's nine-inning game against Toledo.

Ball State's Lisa Rozanski had six hits, six runs and five stolen bases. She is also three triples away from tying the school record.

The Cardinals are 2-3 on the season in mid-week games, 2-13 all-time against Purdue and 0-7 against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette.

Despite the history between the two teams, De Feo said she is confident Ball State will come out on top.

"I think if we take care of what we need to take care of, we'll be OK," De Feo said. "They are beatable, very beatable."
