The Ball State University softball team will look to snap a three-game non-conference losing streak today as it starts a two-day mid-week road trip.
The Cardinals will travel south of the Ohio River for the first time in more than a month, as they will play a doubleheader against Morehead State University. On Wednesday, Ball State will head from Morehead, Ky., to Bloomington to face Indiana University.
Both Ball State and Morehead State have comparable statistics. While Morehead State boasts a 22-point advantage in team batting average, Ball State has two batters with an average higher than Morehead State's best hitter.
The Eagles are second in the Ohio Valley Conference at 11-7, while the Cardinals' 13-2 conference record has them in control of the Mid-American Conference West Division and in second overall in the MAC.
Jen Reifschneider tied the Ball State single season home run record last weekend, but there is another record that could fall in today's doubleheader.
Last year as a freshman, Lisa Rozanski set the Ball State single season stolen base record with 43. This year, she has 24, which puts her three steals shy of tying the Ball State career record of 70.
Base stealing has been a mainstay for Ball State this year, as the team has stolen 82 times. Comparatively, Morehead State has stolen 31.
Coach Craig Nicholson said he thinks the teams are very comparable on every level, and their conference is just as strong as the MAC.
The doubleheader was not originally on the schedule but was added after the cancellation of Ball State's game at IPFW.
"We were just trying to find someone to play," Nicholson said. "They're helping us out with hotels and that stuff [tonight]. Then we can just drive from there to IU."
The first pitch at Morehead State is slated for 5 p.m. at the Rowan County High School softball field.
