Students looking to think outside the bun will soon have an on-campus food option. Once the renovations are complete, the L.A. Pittenger Student Center will have a Taco Bell.
The student center is notoriously empty. It's far from the center of campus and therefore does not solicit much foot traffic. However, college students flock to the bell.
Taco Bell is the restaurant that featured not only a dollar menu, but 20 items less than a dollar menu.
In 1997 the alien-like, talking Chihuahua made his TV debut talking about two tacos for 99 cents. By 1998 the dog had been featured in 15 commercials, according to a New York Times article.
Taco Bell is every starving student's dream. It's hot, cheap and edible. Now it will be accessible, too.
The university has also arranged for our caffeinated needs to be met by a Starbucks that will also be in the student center. This will be a much welcome addition to campus following the closure of the Barnes & Noble café in the Ball State Bookstore.
Despite personal preferences regarding Taco Bell, it's hard to be upset with the university choice. Mid-afternoon cheesy fiesta potato and gordita crunch wrap cravings no longer have to go unanswered!
If, for some reason, students wanted the best of both name brand eateries in the student center, they could pair their south-of-the-border-style lunch with a midday latte.
However students choose to use the student center and its services is obviously up to them. Overall students should just try to use the student center after it's renovated. Between the lure of tacos, nachos, frappuccinos and chai the temptation to wander south of the Atrium for food will hopefully be too much to ignore.
Show appreciation for the university's efforts to feed the masses (cheaply) and dive in.
Don't be thinkin' Arby's.
Yo quiero Taco Bell.
